Statistical Analysis & Consulting

Sample Projects: Statistics consulting services for Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) candidates completing their capstone research projects

Hypotheses

Doctor of Nursing Practice candidates posed testable questions to assess whether specific interventions could improve outcomes in areas like infection rates, cognitive function, or self-efficacy.

Findings

Each research question was addressed with methodological rigor and the proper selection and application of statistical tests. Results were clearly described and interpreted, and delivered alongside coaching sessions to support oral defense preparation.

Problem Description

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) capstone projects require statistical analysis

Professionals pursuing a doctorate degree in nursing (DNP) must design and implement an evidence-based project aimed at improving patient outcomes or care practices. Project results must be analyzed and interpreted with statistical rigor, so some students choose to partner with a professional statistician or data scientist to ensure methodological accuracy. Below are summaries of 3 DNP projects, highlighting the statistical tests used along with sample data visualizations and other outputs.

A Data Driven Approach to Understand the Problem

Darden wanted to understand the key factors affecting Olive Garden performance using a data driven approach so that they could make more informed  decisions and analyze potential risks.

DNP Project 1 - REDUCING FOLEY INFECTIONS

  • Research Question: Can a nurse-driven protocol reduce catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTIs) by limiting the use of indwelling urinary catheters that are no longer medically necessary?

  • 2 years of monthly data were gathered for two primary outcome measures: Device Utilization  Rate and Foley Infections per 1000 Device Days

  • One-tailed, unpaired Student’s t-tests were performed to evaluate whether implementation of the protocol led to significant reductions in the monthly rates of these outcomes.

DNP Project 2 - IMPROVING COGNITIVE FUNCTION

  • Research Question: For older adults with mild cognitive impairment in long-term care, can physical activity and exercise improve cognitive function?

  • Scores from the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MOCA) for a small group of patients were compared before and after the group participated in a 6-week physical exercise protocol (PEP)

  • Paired Student’s t-tests (both one- and two-tailed) indicated a statistically significant improvement in the average MOCA score between 2.7 and 6.5 points at the 95% confidence level.

DNP Project 3 - IMPACTING PERCEIVED SELF-EFFICACY

  • Research Question: Is there a measurable impact on the perceived self-efficacy of Graduate Nurses due to receiving Evidence Based Practice (EBP) education and giving a related presentation at the end of their one-year Residency Program?

  • A cohort of graduate nurses took the General Self-Efficacy survey at two points (before and after intervention) and the results were compared.

  • Wilcoxon signed-rank tests (the non-parametric analog of paired t-tests for comparing medians in non-normal distributions) were used to assess differences in survey responses.

Statistical Consulting for Greenhouse Gas Reduction Project

Climate Technology / Sustainability

Provided statistical consulting for development of a digital platform supporting carbon credit issuance in clean cookstove projects via household survey projects. Assessed and refined platform's sampling logic and approach to better adhere with UNFCC and related sampling protocols. Delivered recommendations and guidance on topics including stratified and cluster sampling methods and related sample size and target parameter calculations.

Medical Device Function Survey & Statistical Analysis

Healthcare / Market Research

Analyzed survey data collected from users of a new medical device to support function prioritization and product refinement. Developed a custom analytical framework to address the small sample size and scale heterogeneity between the survey's two scoring systems. The approach included methods for response standardization and weighting to correct for intrapersonal inconsistency. Final outputs included ranked feature scores, correlation matrices, and compelling visualizations.

Retail Customer Segmentation Analysis & Targeted Strategy Recommendations

Consumer Goods / Retail

Deep-dived into historical data for a long-standing retailer in New Zealand transitioning to online sales while continuing to mail out physical catalogues at significant cost. Detailed statistical analyses led to recommendations for which catalogues to send, at what frequency, to which customer segments, in order to optimize conversion rate and order value.
